The outrage over Representative Joe Wilson (R. S.C.) and his rude outburst last Wednesday night during President Barack Obama’s speech has done much inside the political system:

1) Focused Democrats and Republicans on the issue of illegal aliens getting free health insurance. Prior to the Wilson Incident, this issue had been glossed over in both the House and Senate. In fact, Democrats twice rejected GOP moves to tighten enforcement provisions to guarantee that illegals would not be eligible for any freebies the Federal Government makes available. But since Wilson’s outburst, this thorny issue has indeed been put on the radar screen; his week negotiators in the Senate were going to address this illegal immigration aspect of the health care issue.

2) Shown the incredible power of the Internet. In the first four days after Wednesday’s incident, Wilson’s 2008 and likely 2010 Democrat opponent raised a whopping $700,000 online; Wilson trumped him and raised $850,000. And the money keeps rolling in—as both have used the incident to do active fund-raising events, sell T-shirts, bumper stickers etc. Pro-Wilson forces are running fund-raising ads on the top of The DRUDGE REPORT and elsewhere.

3) Demonstrated that out-of-the-norm behavior—that is behavior which shocks and is often deemed rude and inappropriate—works! If this heretofore totally unheard of Congressman hadn’t been inspired to do something he should not have done then none of the above happens.

Just look at Kanye West’s rude behavior on the MTV Music Award Show Sunday night! He was way, way off-base—and is being rewarded for it by getting tons of free publicity today.

4) Now, as to the issue that caused the outburst in the first place: the giving of free health care to illegals—or giving them any any other tax-payer paid benefits. This brings up the entire immigration issue, which is bedeviling Americans and non-Americans alike. It is disgraceful that we cannot or have not secured our borders. It is awful for Hispanic-American citizens to be ‘lumped into the pot’ and discriminated against because of anger against those who cut the line and broke the law to come to this country.

There is palpable anger all across our nation over illegals under-cutting the labor market, over-loading hospital emergency rooms, and their children increasing the load on public elementary and high schools.

This overall illegal immigration problem needs to be addressed—and soon—by our political system. The key is to control future access to our border before we then decide what should be the status of the 30-40 million illegals here today.

With the ham-handed and incompetent way the Obama Administration has handled the health care issue and budget items gives all of us no confidence that they would make the right decisions here either.

5) Will expand on this theme later, but we can see over and over again that when the Republican Party/conservative movement is weak, vacillating or ineffective, then there is no Moral Center and thus the nation spirals downward. This has happened in the individual states, to. Look at California and New York. No sooner does the GOP implode through arrogance or missteps that the Democrats win and the state then goes kaplooey. It is as if the moral center ceases to exist.

When the Bush-led GOP went off the tracks in 2002, the nation began a steady decline which culminated in two successive Democratic sweeps in 2006 and 2008.

And look now at the result of those victories—and the absence of a moral center in the form of a responsible Republican Party.
