As 2010 comes to an end, a few observations:

1) TIME MAGAZINE proved its irrelevance and reinforced why it is in terminal decline by naming Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of FACEBOOK—featured in THE SOCIAL NETWORK hit movie this past summer—as its 2010 PERSON OF THE YEAR. Are they kidding? In a year of Tea Party political revolution and Wikileaks treachery and heroic Chilean miners, this man is the most important man of 2010?

2) American politics has now disintegrated into near-anarchy. If a Republican Member of Congress even talks about working with President Obama, he/she is demonized. The word “compromise” is banned from our vocabulary—to be replaced by finding “common ground.” How exactly are we going to get anything done like tax cuts and soon–hopefully—spending cuts if we will not work with the (elected) White House? Isn’t politics the art of getting as much of what you can get now and then, in the next election, trying to win more power to do even more?

I hear some talk radio hosts and Sarah Palin and others decrying this tax cut deal. Interesting. These are the same people who were totally in the tank for G.W. Bush and a Republican Congress who were more liberal and fiscally irresponsible than anyone we have seen on the political scene in years! But now they’re fiscal conservatives?

I love almost all conservative talk radio hosts, but they got all flummoxed up with Bush. And because of Bush we have Obama. If Bush had ruled properly, there is no way someone so outside the American political mainstream as Barack Obama would ever have won the White House. But G.W. Bush blew it so badly that the country reacted by going to the other extreme. Thus, we have Obama.

3) No, the tax deal isn’t perfect. But the GOP—not the Tea Party movement—has been fixated on tax cuts over everything and anything else. Wasn’t the lesson of 2010 that we need to cut the National Debt and reduce the size of government? Isn’t our precarious fiscal situation in part responsible for the mess our national economy is in? Yet the GOP pushes these tax cuts over debt reduction—and in that conflict will come the imminent Civil War inside the GOP and the conservative movement.

4) I proudly voted in Congress in 1981 for the Reagan Tax Cuts—with one HUGE reservation: where were some spending cuts? We never had them!!! Yes, we were in a Democratic House, but couldn’t the GOP have tried harder to cut government? So, while the tax cuts did indeed reinvigorate the national economy, the Federal Government exploded in size. And we are today paying for that constant spending–which happened again under G. W. Bush and a GOP Congress: tax cuts, two wars with no one paying for them and then this idiotic Medicare Prescription Drug Benefit–an entitlement put in by Republicans!!!

5) No wonder the Tea Party has come along. And no wonder the Republican Party cannot find its way.

6) The Tea Party movement, not Mark Zuckerberg, should have been the PERSON OF THE YEAR. The Tea Party is the only entity keeping a fiscal eye on the ball in DC.

Former Congressman John LeBoutillier was banned from this program for a little while, but Imus deemed him officially un-banned today, and congratulated his guest on taking his banishment “like a man.”

But LeBoutillier is all too familiar with the I-Man’s ways, and knew how not to anger him. “I’ve listened since May of 1972,” he said. “I am the Imus listener.”

Now, however, he is an Imus guest, and as such is required to make thorough, concise, interesting observations while Imus pretends to listen and understand.

LeBoutillier, now a “nationally recognized right-wing nut,” according to Imus, thinks the results of the midterm elections earlier this month, where Republicans made substantial gains, are proof of a genuine fear among Americans that their country is declining.

“The country, like a billiard ball, is bouncing back and forth, left and right, looking quickly for a solution to that question: are we going down the drain?” he said. “Can we forestall it? Can we fix the problem?”

The Republicans and Democrats, in his view, don’t know how to handle anything, and have completely lost it. Case in point: Rep. John Boehner, the soon-to-be Speaker of the House, and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, both Republicans, turned down an opportunity to meet tomorrow with President Obama.

“They are so afraid of meeting publicly with Obama for fear that the Tea Party and the Right will accuse them of doing a dirty deal with the devil,” LeBoutillier said. “Until they get that whole thing set on the Right between the Republicans and the Tea Party, and everybody’s together, they don’t even want to talk to the President of the United States.”

Unfortunately, elections in this country are won in the middle of the political spectrum, LeBoutiller said, and that middle “is sitting there, disgusted with both parties.”

Which is what gave rise to the Tea Party, a primarily economic movement. “Financially, we’ve spent the country into oblivion—federally, on a state level, and personally,” LeBoutillier said, adding, “We’re living beyond our means as people, and as a nation.”

Though Imus ascribes to Matt Taibbi’s theory that all this political nonsense is merely a diversion from larger, more disturbing financial dealings of people on Wall Street and in Washington, LeBoutiller is somewhat less skeptical.

“It’s two separate things going on at the same time,” he said.

After a few minutes talking about upcoming guest Bethany McLean’s first book about Enron, called The Smartest Guys in the Room, Imus declared the interview over.

“We’re out of time and we’ve accomplished nothing,” he said. “You answers were good, my questions weren’t. I don’t understand any of it, and I’m pretty much thinking about other stuff.”

WASHINGTON, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- Two former U.S. congressmen are opposing part of a nuclear deal being negotiated between the United States and Vietnam, which could be finalized by next month.

The arrangement would allow more cooperation between the two countries on nuclear technology. But former Congressmen William Hendon, R-N.C. and John LeBoutillier, R-N.Y., voiced their concerns over part of the deal, as it does not include restrictions on enriching uranium, the process by which nuclear weapons can be made.

The former congressmen argued that the move could heighten the risk of nuclear proliferation; could increase the possibility of nuclear materials falling into extremists' hands; and contended that the deal ran counter to the U.S. policy.

"We're going to give the Vietnamese nuclear enrichment authority, which could lead to nuclear weapons or, more frightening, loose nuclear material in terrorist hands," Hendon told a news conference in Washington.

The Vietnamese government has claimed that it plans to use the technology for peaceful means.

U.S. President Barack Obama won a Nobel Peace Prize in part because of his nuclear non-proliferation stance, but critics blasted the Vietnam deal as contradicting the president's stated nuclear goals.

Obama vowed in a speech from Prague in April 2009 that the United States would take the lead in pushing for a world devoid of nuclear weapons.

In spring he hosted a major nuclear summit in Washington in which participants agreed to secure vulnerable nuclear materials within their borders within four years—the goal he outlined in the Prague speech. They also agreed on what Obama called the responsibility of nations to maintain effective security of the nuclear materials and facilities under their control.

Aside from critics who charge that the Vietnam deal contradicts Obama's proposal of a nuclear-free world, others argue the arrangement represents a double standard. The United States goes to great lengths to prevent certain countries from acquiring nuclear technology but fails to apply the same rigid policies to others, critics said.

As such, a U.S. government debate over whether to press for the inclusion of a clause restricting Vietnam from enriching uranium is currently under way in Washington, according to the U.S. media reports.

The Obama administration set the so-called "gold standard" in a deal with the United Arab Emirates, when it prohibited that country from producing nuclear fuel on its soil, but did not insist on the same standard for Vietnam.

Observers here believe the arrangement with Vietnam is part of a broader U.S. strategic effort to focus more on Asia.

Yesterday, COMMENTARY editor John Podhoretz wrote a column which appeared in the NEW YORK POST. His thrust was that in big “change” elections—1980, 1994 and this year—some “weirdos” who are unfit to hold public office are inadvertently swept into office.

He listed a few examples and then he wrote this: “In the House, there was John LeBoutillier, who was Glenn Beck before Glenn Beck even existed—the author of an incendiary book called ‘Harvard Hates America’ who spent his two years in Congress calling Democratic House Speaker Tip O‘Neill fat and declaring that a Republican senator from Illinois named Chuck Percy was "a living disaster with no redeeming features.”

Mr. Podhoretz had a column to write, had a pre-ordained theory to prove and thus took me and shoe-horned me into that theory—regardless of facts or the truth.

In fact, the most “incendiary” thing about my first book, HARVARD HATES AMERICA, was the title.

Secondly, I did not spend my time in Congress calling Tip O‘Neill “fat.” What I did say was. “Tip O‘Neill and the federal budget are both the same: big, fat and out-of-control.”

Who today would not agree with that characterization of decades of federal spending? Is that not the genesis of most of the Tea Party Movement?

As for my criticisms of then-Illinois Senator Charles Percy, I was the first one out-of-the-box to go after him for his desire to recognize the PLO and Yasser Arafat while the PLO was happily slaughtering Israelis.

And do you know what? I haven't changed any of the above beliefs one bit in the intervening 30 years.

Harvard still hates mainstream, middle-class America. The Federal Government is way, way too fat—under both Republicans and Democrats. And anyone who is afraid to stand up to radical murdering Palestinian extremists is indeed a disgrace.

A life-long resident of Westbury, Long Island, John LeBoutillier was born in Glen Cove, New York on May 26, 1953.

A 1976 Magna Cum Laude graduate of Harvard College with a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Harvard Business School, LeBoutillier used his college experience as the basis of his book, Harvard Hates America. Lecturer and author, LeBoutillier has since written numerous articles which have appeared on the New York Times Op-Ed Page, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times Sunday Magazine and in major publications throughout the nation.

He first rose to national prominence in 1974 when, at the age of 21 and a sophomore at Harvard, he raised over a quarter million dollars for Leo Thorsness, a former P.O.W., in a South Dakota Senate race against George McGovern.

In 1976 he served as regional coordinator, responsible for all field activities, in New Jersey for Gerald Ford’s presidential campaign.

Elected on November 4, 1980 to represent New York’s 6th District, LeBoutillier was the youngest member of the 97th Congress. During that time he served on the House Foreign Affairs Committee and, as a member of the Special House POW/MIA Task Force pressed for continuing investigation to determine the fate of 2,500 Americans still unaccounted for in Indochina.

Since leaving Congress in 1983, LeBoutillier has run the Sky Hook II Project, a privately funded group dedicated to recovering living American Prisoners of War held against their will in Southeast Asia. Sky Hook II has over 50, 000 American supporters. Its purposes are to gather on-the-ground human intelligence throughout Laos and Vietnam and to educate the American public about the POW issue.

Since 1983, Mr. LeBoutillier has journeyed to Southeast Asia many times, including two trips to Vietnam as the guest of the Hanoi government, to discuss a solution to the POW problem.

In 1989 LeBoutillier authored Vietnam Now; A Case for Normalizing Relations with Hanoi published by Praeger Publishers.

In 1981 Mr. LeBoutillier conducted the first American television interview with Alexander Solzhinitsyn on NBC’s TOMORROW SHOW. Also in late 1981, Congressman LeBoutillier interviewed President Reagan from his ranch on WMCA radio on Thanksgiving afternoon.

In 1984 Mr. LeBoutillier conducted the first live radio interview with former President Richard M. Nixon for the ABC Talk Radio Network in a three-hour ABC Special Presentation.

From 1983-1989, Mr. LeBoutillier was the primary substitute at WMCA Radio for radio hosts Barry Gray and Bob Grant. He also had his own Sunday morning show on WPLJ. He has also hosted shows on WABC.
